John H. Coleman Jr. was born in 1938 in the Church Hill section of Richmond, Virginia. After separating from the U.S. Navy, he relocated to Hampton, Virginia, where he married Mary and began raising a family.
In 1966, Coleman joined the Hampton Police Division, beginning a 25-year career in law enforcement. Throughout his years of service, he became deeply involved in his community, with a particular commitment to working with and supporting the youth of Hampton.
After retiring with the rank of Sergeant, Coleman continued his commitment to community service while operating a small business. His life reflects a continued dedication to service, family, entrepreneurship, and creating a positive impact in the communities around him.
Coleman is also the author of A View from Church Hill: I Woke Up in My Right Mind, a thought-provoking book that draws from his personal experiences and reflections on race relations in America. Through his stories and perspectives, he challenges readers to examine their own views, consider the complexities of the past, and think about how they can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society.
